Summer Lives On: Autumn in Tropical North Queensland
Autumn looks great in green. Between March and May, Tropical North Queensland takes on a lush vibrancy during the gradual transition from summer to winter. The cooler nights are perfect for curling up in a rainforest cabin, sheltered by a full, glossy canopy, while clear, sunny days call for a dip in one of many wild swimming holes or vibrant reefs.
Here’s our guide to autumn in Tropical North Queensland.
Tropical North Queensland in autumn
The transition between Summer and Winter in the tropics is gentle and temperate. A time of subtle beauty, soft showers and rich colour, autumn brings the best of summer, but with decreasing humidity as the evenings begin to cool. Here’s what you can expect from Tropical North Queensland in autumn.
Comfortable climate
From March to May, summer’s heat and humidity begin to ease. Temperatures hold warm, averaging between 21°C and 29°C in Cairns. Regular rainfall keeps the days pleasant and the rivers rushing, petering out as the season deepens toward winter. As the skies clear, the seas calm, offering ideal conditions for snorkelling and diving.
Autumnal colour
Despite lacking the dry reds and browns of an oncoming cold, autumn in Tropical North Queensland is rich and deep with colour. Summer’s rejuvenating rains bring glossy greens to the rainforest and bright tropical fish glint between the vibrant corals of the Great Barrier Reef. As the sun sets, fiery autumnal oranges bounce off the ocean and leap across the sky before giving way to a warm starry night.
Active wildlife
Autumn is a prime time for wildlife encounters. Migratory birds flock to the rainforests and wetlands, while reef waters teem with marine life, offering incredible snorkelling and diving experiences. In the Daintree, keep an eye out for cassowaries wandering near walking tracks, and listen for the chorus of frogs in the evenings. With fewer people around, you’ll have a better chance of spotting these tropical treasures in their natural habitat.

Autumnal activities
Lush and alive, Tropical North Queensland’s incredible landscapes are best seen from within. Autumn’s gentle seas, sheltered rainforests and thundering waterfalls invite relaxation and adventure in equal measure. Here are the best ways to savour the season:
White-water rafting
Still rushing from summer’s rejuvenating rains, rivers and waterfalls are rapid and temperate in autumn, making the perfect conditions for waterfall chasing and white-water rafting. Get the adrenaline pumping on a white-water rafting tour, surrounded by World Heritage Rainforest. Or, for a more relaxed pace, float down Mossman River on a River Drift Snorkel Tour.
Waterfall chasing
Quench the heat under the spray of a thundering waterfall. Tropical North Queensland boasts more vertical waterways than almost anywhere else in the country, and as soft autumn rains continue to replenish the land, you’ll be able to experience them at full force.
Snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef
Under autumn’s clear skies and calm waters, the Great Barrier Reef teems with life and colour. Visibility is excellent for snorkelling and diving, where you’ll spot schools of vibrant tropical fish and all kinds of marine life. Just remember, the warm tropical waters are as enticing to stinging jellyfish as they are to us, so it is important to wear a stinger suit throughout the season.
Rainforest hikes
The Daintree and Kuranda rainforests are at their most spectacular after the wet season. Trails are lush, waterfalls are flowing and wildlife is active. Popular walks include the Mossman Gorge circuit and the boardwalks through Cape Tribulation. Savour the sights and soundscapes of a living rainforest canopy. Take a breath, drawing in the smell of fresh eucalypt and petrichor as you linger among ancient trees and crystal-clear streams.
Beach days
Far North Queensland is lined with inviting beaches, and the warm tropical weather calls for lazy days on the sun-soaked sands or a refreshing swim in the ocean. Keep an eye out for wildlife roaming along the coast in the early mornings and evenings. Stinger nets remain in place until May, so you can find a safe spot for a swim.
Embrace the rain
Don’t let a tropical shower dampen your spirits. Don a light jacket and take a walk in the wet among glistening emerald greenery under a thick, sheltered canopy. Admire mythical views over the misty rainforest from the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. Watch a storm roll over from the cosy comfort of a local bar or brewery, or just dive into the water. If you’re going to get wet anyway, it might as well be in the Great Barrier Reef.
Taste the tropics
Sweet tropical produce remains in abundance through autumn. Savour sweet, nectar-filled mangoes or tangy lychees. Try some native bushfoods and stock up on your favourites at a local market or roadside fruit stall. Many local cafés and restaurants also feature seasonal fruit in their dishes, as well as refreshing smoothies, desserts and cocktails.
