Go East for your Weekend Break

When dreaming of a weekend getaway in the city, your first thought probably isn’t of Brisbane, but this up-and-coming capital is perfect for short stays. So get ahead of the crowd and luxury up your weekend on a sun-drenched east coast holiday!

Brisvegas: the capital that isn’t, or the small town that could. You never know what you’ll discover next in this city-on-the rise. Keep it ultra-luxe when you base yourself at Next Hotel, right in the heart of the CBD. Pass from street-level into sleek, soundproofed style, complete with state-of-the-art technology and sweeping city views. Just below is the mecca of Queen Street Mall—a vibrant scene of big designer brands, chic cafes and endless entertainment. After you’ve spent the morning browsing boutiques, skip downriver to West End and check out the 100-plus local growers and artisans at Boundary Street Markets. Grab a bite to eat at one of the many trendy cafes and restaurants scattered like haloumi-flavoured confetti through West End, like Billy Kart Kitchen or The Gunshop Café.

From there head to South Bank, where you have the choice of soaking up some rays at the Streets Beach and wandering under the gorgeous, ‘grammable bougainvillea, or taking a culture hit at GOMA. With over 1700 works of art, international exhibitions and interactive displays, you could while away an entire afternoon at this spectacular gallery. But leave a little left in the tank, because tonight you’re taking part in a Brisbane institution: Eat Street Northshore. Every Friday and Saturday night Hamilton Wharf comes alive with this eclectic foodie festival made of shipping containers. Take the City Cat and sample cultural temptations and wicked desserts, like the cronut and all of its delicious cousins.

It’s day two, and if there’s one thing Brisbane does well, it’s breakfast. There’s a real café culture in the city, with barely a boring bowl of muesli to be found. Try Willow & Spoon in Windsor or Scout Café on Petrie Terrace for a real treat. Once you’re fuelled up and ready to go, burn some of that energy at Mt Coot-Tha, Brisbane’s highest peak just 7 kilometres from the CBD. Abundant trails and gorgeous panoramic views of the city await you at the top. Wander at a more sedately pace through the Botanic Gardens at the foot of the mountain, exploring sub-tropical beauty arranged into thematic and geographical displays. If you’ve worked up a thirst, it’s a short trip over to the iconic Regatta Hotel in Toowong. Expect Queenslander charm complete with iron lace balconies, craft beer and tranquil Brisbane River views.

Whatever time of year you choose, a short break in this dazzling city is one of the best ways to discover Australia and the dusty little diamonds of its emerging scene.
